Project 5: Worked Example

Image
This worked example combines video, narration, and text in the form of multiple-choice comprehension and self-explanation questions to present a step-by-step demonstration of how to set up the grade center in the learning management system Blackboard. The applications I used were Loom and PlayPosit. This worked example is a redesign of my static multimedia tutorial from this post . The worked example is available on  YouTube without the questions or below via PlayPosit. Audience and Description of Topic : The intended audience of this worked example is new-hire adjunct instructors in higher education. The worked example tasks them with setting up their own Blackboard grade centers for their respective courses. The worked example video covers the four initial steps in setting up the grade center, including removing unwanted columns, adding categories, creating a weighted column, and creating a grade column.  As these new hires typically do not have prior experience with learni...

Coherence Analysis

Do you think an online course that fully absorbs learners' attention with interesting facts, relatable stories, soothing background music, and attention-grabbing videos would produce better learning than a course that had only the essentials?  This article analyzes the Coherence Principle within the context of e-learning design,  development, and learning. In it, you can find the definition of the principle, as well as examples of its successful and unsuccessful application in e-learning for adult learners, including English as second language learners and working professionals. How the Coherence Principle relates to principles applied in this post using the Modality and Redundancy Principles and this post using the Multimedia Principle is discussed along with limitations for its application .  In writing this analysis, I paid particular attention to communicating my ideas concisely and avoiding adding unnecessary details that would distract from the main ideas of the ...

Project 2: Narrated Presentation Analysis

This narrated presentation integrates text, images, graphics, and audio narration using the modality and redundancy principles. The applications I used were Microsoft Sway, PowerPoint, and Snip & Sketch. The presentation is available below and on Sway .   Topic and Audience :  The narrated presentation covers the topic of adapting the modality and redundancy principles for English language learners (ELLs) in e-learning. The presentation begins by introducing viewers to the difficulties second or foreign language learners experience when asked to learn from simultaneous narration, graphics, and on-screen text in English. The presentation then defines the principles and offers guidance for adapting them in developing effective e-learning for ELLs.  The intended audience is TESOL professionals who are new to designing and developing e-learning or other educators who want to be inclusive to ELLs. It is intended for educators who have no prior knowledge of the topic. In th...

The tutorial consists of five subtasks that are done in the order specified in the tutorial to create a functional grade center. All five subtasks are included because each subtask is dependent on the others to enter and display student grades effectively. The intended audience for the tutorial is adjunct instructors, typically retirees or new professionals, who have not previously used Blackboard and may be unfamiliar with calculating weighted grades based on specified student learning outcomes. Learning Outcomes for Task : Before Week 2 of classes ends, instructors will set up their Blackboard Grade Ce...

Welcome to my ELRC 7505 Learning Log!

Image
Over the next five weeks I will be posting artifacts, along with description and analysis, that I have created as a student in the course ELRC 7505 Design & Development of Multimedia Units.      My interest in this course, and overall goal of earning a graduate certificate in Educational Technology, began several years ago when I was asked to create online courses and multi-course online English for specific purposes programs for my institution. Prior to finishing the development of the courses, I completed two relevant trainings: Quality Matters Teaching Online Certificate and TESOL's certificate in Developing an Online Teaching Program for English language learners. Taking this course and completing Educational Technology coursework will enhance my abilities to create multimedia units and allow me to reflect on and revise courses I have previously developed. Amber presents on her aviation English online program course design at TESOL 2019....
